A Simple Tribute, A Meaningful Day: Gandhi Jayanti at PURE Abhyasa

On 2 October 2026, children at PURE’s Abhyasa Bridge Schools in the forest areas of Telangana came together to celebrate Gandhi Jayanti in a simple and meaningful way.

There were no elaborate arrangements or grand ceremonies. Instead, the day focused on values children could understand and practice in their everyday lives, including truth, respect, cleanliness, kindness, responsibility and peaceful living.

For children growing up in remote forest communities, occasions like Gandhi Jayanti also become opportunities to learn beyond textbooks and connect important values with everyday actions.

Beginning the Day with Respect

The celebration began with a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.

Gandhi Ji’s photograph was respectfully displayed and decorated with flowers. One by one, the children came forward to offer flowers and take part in the tribute.

Teachers spoke to the children in simple, age-appropriate language about Gandhiji and the values he stood for, including speaking the truth, respecting others, living peacefully and helping the people around us.

Learning Values Through Simple Activities

At Abhyasa, learning extends beyond classroom lessons.

Teachers used the occasion to help children understand values through simple and engaging activities. Through conversations, gestures and participation, important ideas were made easier for young children to understand.

The children explored lessons around kind behaviour, thoughtful words, respect for others and responsibility in everyday life.

Rather than learning only through explanations, they were able to experience the meaning of the celebration in a way that felt natural and memorable.

Learning Through Action

One of the most meaningful parts of the celebration took place outside the classroom.

Children participated in a cleanliness activity around their school surroundings. Working together, they helped clear the area and care for the environment around their learning space.

The activity turned an important message into a practical experience.

Children could see that cleanliness is not only something to talk about. It is a shared responsibility, and even small actions can contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment.

In the forest communities where Abhyasa operates, experiential activities like these are an important part of learning. They encourage children to participate, cooperate and develop a sense of responsibility toward the places they share.

A Special Treat Shared Together

The celebration also brought a little extra happiness to the school day.

After the activities, refreshments were distributed to the children. Sitting together with their classmates, they enjoyed the special treat and the simple joy of sharing the occasion as a group.

For children, celebrations are often remembered through these small moments: sitting with friends, receiving something special, laughing together and knowing that the day was made meaningful for them.

These shared experiences help strengthen a sense of belonging within the school community.

Small Actions, Lasting Values

Gandhi Jayanti at Abhyasa was a reminder that meaningful learning does not always require a large event.

A flower offered with respect.

A lesson about truth and peace.

A school surrounding cleaned together.

A helping hand.

A treat shared with friends.

Each small experience gave children an opportunity to connect values with everyday actions.

PURE Abhyasa works with children in remote forest and tribal communities where access to education and essential services can be challenging. The Bridge School model combines foundational learning with nutrition, activity-based education and experiences that support children’s overall development.

The program also incorporates games, art, experiential learning and audio-visual methods to help children engage with learning in ways that suit their needs and surroundings.

For these children, school is more than a place for reading and writing. It is also a space where they learn to participate, cooperate, express themselves, build confidence and understand the world around them.

A Day to Remember

The Gandhi Jayanti celebration was simple, but its message was meaningful.

Through respect, participation, service and sharing, the children experienced values that can continue far beyond a single celebration.

As the day came to an end, what remained was not only the memory of flowers, activities and treats, but also a lesson children could carry into everyday life: meaningful change often begins with small actions.

At PURE Abhyasa, we believe education is not only about what children learn in books. It is also about the values, confidence and sense of responsibility they carry with them beyond the classroom.

A heartfelt thank you to Sudha Motupalli and Sreenivasu Motupalli for supporting this special celebration for the children.
